The Assertiveness Program Module 4
Module 4 introduces practical assertiveness techniques that can be applied across various situations to improve communication and self-expression. It emphasises starting with neutral scenarios for practice and highlights the importance of non-verbal communication—such as maintaining a calm voice, good eye contact, and relaxed body language—to support verbal assertions effectively.
The module covers six core techniques:
- Basic Assertion: Clearly expressing needs, feelings, or opinions using "I" statements.
- Empathic Assertion: Acknowledging others' feelings while expressing one's own needs.
- Consequence Assertion: Communicating potential consequences of someone's behaviour if it continues, used as a last resort.
- Discrepancy Assertion: Highlighting inconsistencies between words and actions to clarify misunderstandings or contradictions.
- Negative Feeling Assertion: Addressing the impact of someone's behaviour on one's emotions in a calm, controlled manner.
- Broken Record Technique: Repeating a prepared statement calmly and consistently to reinforce boundaries or resolve disputes.
The module encourages consistent practice, starting with simpler techniques and progressively incorporating more complex ones. It also recommends maintaining a logbook to track progress and refine skills. Mastering these techniques empowers individuals to communicate assertively while respecting both their own rights and those of others.
