Module 1 introduces assertiveness as a communication style that involves expressing thoughts, feelings, and needs openly while respecting the rights of others. It distinguishes assertiveness from other communication styles like aggression, which violates others’ rights, and passivity, where individuals neglect their own needs.

The module explores common myths about assertiveness, clarifying misconceptions such as equating assertiveness with aggression or believing that it guarantees getting what one wants. It discusses the consequences of unassertive behaviour, including low self-esteem, stress, and strained relationships. Assertiveness is presented as a learned behaviour influenced by upbringing, societal expectations, and cultural norms.

Barriers to assertiveness, like self-defeating beliefs, skills deficits, anxiety, and cultural influences, are identified. Practical exercises are included to assess one’s current level of assertiveness in various situations. The module concludes with an emphasis on breaking unhelpful behavioural cycles and highlights the importance of this foundational step in the journey toward becoming more assertive.
