The Assertiveness Program Module 2

Module 2 focuses on understanding and identifying the differences between passive, aggressive, and assertive communication styles. It highlights the importance of recognising verbal and non-verbal characteristics to develop a more assertive approach in communication.

Passive communication is defined as neglecting one’s own rights and often results in low self-esteem and unhealthy relationships. Aggressive behaviour violates others' rights, often leading to conflict and strained relationships. Assertive communication, in contrast, is described as a balanced and respectful style where individuals express their thoughts, feelings, and needs without infringing on others' rights.

The module explores the payoffs and costs of each style. While assertiveness promotes self-esteem and healthy interactions, it can be challenging to adopt, especially when others resist changes in behaviour. The module encourages practising assertiveness to reduce resentment, improve self-confidence, and foster better relationships. It sets the stage for further exploration of assertiveness techniques in subsequent modules.
