Summary of Module 3: How to Think More Assertively

Module 3 explores the role of thinking in assertive behaviour, identifying unassertive beliefs and providing tools to develop more assertive thought patterns. It begins by highlighting common unassertive beliefs, like the fear of upsetting others or assuming people should know one’s needs without being told.

The module introduces "Assertive Rights," a framework to empower individuals by affirming their rights to express opinions, make mistakes, and prioritise their needs while taking responsibility for the consequences. It emphasises balancing these rights with accountability.

To change unhelpful beliefs, the module provides two key tools:

  1. Thought Diaries: A structured approach to identify, challenge, and reframe unassertive thoughts into balanced, assertive ones by examining evidence and considering alternative perspectives.
  2. Behavioural Experiments: Practical exercises designed to test unassertive beliefs by experiencing real-world outcomes, helping to build confidence in assertive actions.

By using these tools, individuals can develop a more assertive mindset, leading to healthier communication and improved self-esteem. The module encourages consistent practice to make assertive thinking a natural habit.
